If you’re a newcomer to the series or don’t mind something different, the circular combat could very well be a fresh and welcome take on the long-running series. ![]() At the same time, it also marks an even bigger departure over classic Paper Mario combat - more specifically the RPG mechanics from the first two games. Alternatively, some fight sequences are also done in an action style that’s more in line with classic Mario platforming. It’s a gutsy, not to mention risky, proposition from a gameplay design standpoint as it essentially turns battles into a puzzle. While Mario himself is designed with a 2D aesthetic, the world is set in a 3D environment. Opening up the gameplayįor the most part, Origami King’s gameplay is quite solid. All in all, the extra attention that the game pays toward the little things makes Origami King feel like a labor of love, which is always nice to see. These include suspenseful cues that you normally associate with zombie flicks being used to portray the transformation of paper characters into mindless origami foes, which adds a sinister touch to the transformation. Music is also used to great effect to set the mood. ![]() Whispering voices in the woods that provide running commentary on Mario's actions add a sense of mysteriousness and whimsy while further immersing players into its world. Oftentimes, you might find yourself pleasantly surprised as you walk across a bridge and suddenly realize that its wood planks correspond to “do-re-mi” musical notes. The game boasts a rich color palette and is filled with a plethora of little touches that bring the game to life. Origami King’s presentation also benefits from Nintendo’s trademark attention to detail. It’s the kind of lighthearted fun that’s abundant in Origami King, making your journey through the game a much more enjoyable romp. Oftentimes, these include random musings like a Toad telling you that he’s suffering from an unrelated case of amnesia that is so totally related to something you just did. Yeah, that’s our story and we're sticking with it.Īdd Origami King’s hilarious dialogue to the mix and you’ll frequently find yourself chuckling like a doofus. That and maybe have a box of Kleenex handy in case something, uh, gets in your eyes. All I can say is, make sure to work on that 100% completion in order to experience the true ending. Anchoring the storytelling is the relationship between siblings Olivia and Olly, a seemingly simple contrast between good and evil that ultimately turns into a testament to sisterly love and something much, much more.įor folks who decide to see the whole thing through, storytelling is easily one of Origami King’s strengths. Although Origami King’s story starts out as a simple tale, it slowly but surely unfolds into a narrative that’s a lot more compelling by the end of your journey.
